Cursor vs Replit vs Lovable — what each really costs

Updated 13 September 2026 · 9 min read

These three tools get compared constantly, usually as if they do the same job. They do not. Cursor is an editor for people who already write code, Replit is a whole environment that also hosts what you build, and Lovable turns a conversation into a deployed app.

Their pricing reflects that difference, which is why a straight price comparison is misleading. What matters is which meter you will hit first.

The short answer

  • You already write code daily and want it faster: Cursor.
  • You want to build, run and host in one browser tab, including from a phone: Replit.
  • You want a working app from a description without opening an editor: Lovable.
  • You are a team shipping a product: many use Cursor for the code and Lovable for the first version, not one instead of the other.

Cursor: cheap until you lean on the big models

Cursor's paid tier gives you a monthly pool of AI requests. Ordinary autocomplete barely touches it; what drains it is running the agent repeatedly against a large codebase with the most capable models selected. Developers who work in one or two files a day rarely run out. Developers who let the agent refactor across a repo do.

The saving is real but indirect: you are paying for time, not output. If it removes half an hour of boilerplate a day, the subscription pays for itself several times over.

Replit: the compute is the part people forget

Replit's subscription covers the workspace and a monthly allowance of agent credits. The line item that surprises people is deployment compute — an app left running around the clock bills separately from the plan, and a hobby project that nobody visits still costs something to keep awake.

If you only build and never deploy, Replit is straightforwardly priced. If you ship, check the deployment settings before you leave for the weekend.

Lovable: credits are conversation turns

Lovable charges in message credits, and one credit is roughly one instruction to the builder. Vague prompts cost more than precise ones, because you spend credits correcting course. People who plan the app first and describe features one at a time get far more out of a plan than people who iterate by trial and error.

Hosting, a database and authentication come as part of the product rather than as separate bills, which is what makes it cheap for a first version.

Which to buy first

  • Solo developer, existing codebase: Cursor. Nothing else improves an experienced developer's day as directly.
  • Learning to build, or working from a tablet: Replit. Everything is in one place and nothing needs installing.
  • Non-technical founder validating an idea: Lovable. You will have something clickable the same afternoon.
  • Agency or freelancer: Lovable for the first draft, Cursor to take it the rest of the way.

Frequently asked questions

Is Cursor worth it if I already have GitHub Copilot?
Most people who switch say yes, because Cursor's agent works across multiple files and its editor is built around the AI rather than bolting it on. If you only use inline completion, the difference is smaller.
Can Lovable replace a developer?
For a first version, a landing page or an internal tool, often yes. For anything with complex business rules, security requirements or heavy integrations, it gets you the first eighty percent and a developer finishes it.
Why did my Replit bill go up without me doing anything?
Almost always a deployment left running. Deployment compute bills by uptime, separately from the subscription. Check your deployments tab and pause anything you are not using.
Do credits roll over on these tools?
Generally no — monthly allowances reset. Plan your heaviest build sessions inside one billing period rather than spreading them across two.
